IPL 2020 Auction: No change in schedule, venue despite Kolkata protests

IPL 2020 Auction: No change in schedule, venue despite Kolkata protests
Protests over the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act notwithstanding, the Indian Premier League players’ auction for the Indian Premier League will go ahead in Kolkata as scheduled on Thursday.
There have been reports of violence in West Bengal but Kolkata hasn’t exactly been affected.
Delhi Capitals’ management team that will be representing the franchise at the auction is scheduled to reach Kolkata today (Tuesday) to start their final preparation.
“As of Monday evening, IPL auctions are on. Franchises will start arriving by Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning,” a senior BCCI said.
As many as 332 cricketers will go under the hammer at the IPL auction in Kolkata on December 19 with Australia’s Glenn Maxwell and South African Dale Steyn among the list of seven, who have opted for the highest base price of ₹2 crore.
This year’s auction is a small one with only 73 slots, with a maximum of 29 overseas players, to be filled by the eight franchises.
Ahead of the IPL 2020 Auction scheduled for Thursday in Kolkata, the City of Joy has faced protest march to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Act, which paves the way to grant Indian citizenship to the non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

Super Bowl : ₹ 36 crore for a 30-second advertisement spot

Super Bowl is less than a month away. Despite a fall in ratings last year inventory sale rates for the world’s most premium sports event are reportedly sky-rocketing. The NFL showpiece event broadcaster CBS network is selling the 30-second inventory north of$5 million (approximately ₹ 36 crores). The competition between the brands for an ad slot during the Super Bowl broadcast is such that, according to report published in an Adweek Report, the network is left with a limited inventory – and that too in the second half of the game.
Irrespective of a 100-time higher price tag than the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Big Game inventory stays in high demand. The decline in broadcast numbers last year has little bearing on the demand and prices for the Super Bowl ad spots.
The following facts about Super Bowl 30 sec advertising spot’s premiums can put the exceptionally high slot rates in perspective.
> Super Bowl spot rate is 100 times higher than the peak IPL spot rate
> It is over 80-time higher than the ICC World Cup finals featuring India

Bumrah rested; Siraj, Kaul fly in for Australia, New Zealand series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has rested pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah for the upcoming One-Day International series against Australia and the tour of New Zealand.
Keeping in mind the work load of the bowler, it was best felt to give him adequate rest ahead of the home series against Australia, BCCI has stated in a Press release.
Mohammed Siraj will replace Bumrah in the squad for the Australia and New Zealand series.  Siddarth Kaul has also been drafted into the squad for the 3-match T20I series against New Zealand.
Bumrah’s 157.1 overs to take 21 wickets in the four-match Test series Down Under are the highest bowled by a pacer from the either team. Mohammad Shami and Ishant Sharma have bowled 136.4 and 103 for 16 and 11 wickets respectively. Only Nathan Lyon (242.1 over/21 wickets) has bowled more overs than him.

PANT HITS NEW HIGHS FOR AN INDIA WICKETKEEPER

  • The former ICC U19 Cricket World Cup star attains joint-highest ranking among batsmen by a wicketkeeper from India and highest rating points by a gloveman from his country
  • Pujara, Harris, Markram and Asad among other batsmen to move up; Yadav, Lyon, Olivier and Shaheen also advance
Rishabh Pant has attained new highs for an India wicketkeeper in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings after his superb century in the drawn final Test in Sydney.
The 21-year-old left-hander has gained 21 slots and reached 17th place, the joint-highest by a specialist India wicketkeeper along with Farokh Engineer, who did so in January 1973. Further, Pant’s aggregate of 673 rating points are the highest by an India wicketkeeper, with Dhoni having the next highest aggregate of 662 points and Engineer 619 points. Dhoni’s highest Test ranking was 19th.
Pant, a star at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in 2016 when he scored an 18-ball half-century against Nepal, has moved into the top-20 after only his ninth Test match with an unbeaten 159. Pant had started the Australia tour in 59th place and made rapid progress, scoring 350 runs in a series that also saw him take 20 catches.
Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored 521 runs to help beat Australia 2-1 and claim the player of the series award, is another batsman to gain in the latest rankings update, which also takes into account performances in the second Test between South Africa and Pakistan in Cape Town.
Pujara has gained one slot to reach third position while all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (up six places to 57th) and rookie opener Mayank Agarwal (up five places to 62nd) are the others from his team to advance at the end of a historic series win.
Spinner Kuldeep Yadav has gained seven slots to reach a career-best 45th position after his figures of five for 99 in Australia’s first innings even as Jasprit Bumrah has held on to 16th position and Mohammed Shami has gained one place to take the 22nd slot. Jadeja has gained one place to reach fifth among bowlers and has also leapfrogged Windies captain Jason Holder into second place among all-rounders.
For Australia, opener Marcus Harris has advanced 21 places to take a career-best 69th position after a fine 79 in the first innings while off-spinner Nathan Lyon has inched up from 14th to 13th position.
South Africa’s Aiden Markram has moved back into the top 10 after his knock of 78 at Cape Town, gaining seven slots to reach 10th position. Temba Bavuma has moved into the top 30 for the first time (up five places to 26th) after his score of 75 while captain Faf du Plessis’s first-innings century has lifted him six places to 16th position.

LaLiga clubs get $1.5 bn as TV rights revenue share; Barcelona get $ 175 mn

The LaLiga clubs have become richer by $1.5 billion (₹10,500 crores) just on account of media rights revenues distributed by the Spanish top division football league.
Barcelona and Real Madrid yet again claimed the lion’s share, according to the latest figures published by Spanish football’s top flight.
Reigning champions Barcelona received the highest amount for the second consecutive season, securing a whopping $175.8 million.
The other biggest name of the league, Real Madrid netted $168.9 million for their 2017/18 campaign. This share is set to go down considerably next season for Real Madrid as the club is going through a form slump. Real Madrid’s city rivals Atletico Madrid notched the third highest amount with $126.2 million
In total, the league has distributed $1.5 billion among Spain’s 20 top-flight clubs, with a 7% of that figure deducted due to obligations, including 3.5% in compensation to clubs relegated to the second tier.
Despite the sustained dominance of Barca and the two Madrid sides, who claimed more than 30% of the disbursed amount, the gap between LaLiga’s biggest and smallest clubs has closed as the league continues to work towards a fair distribution model.

Gill emulating Kohli, Raina song BCCI’s most-watched video tweets of 2018

More than eight million people follow the Board of Control for Cricket in India on twitter. For Virat Kohli the figure is close to 28 million. So when Kohli is on twitter the post becomes a rage in natural course. A post about Kohli on the BCCI official handle @BCCI will attract enough views to be among the trends on twitter.
But when Kohli plays a special act and a next gen champion Subhuman Gill emulates the feat, the comparative video becomes a rage. That is the most-watched video of the year on the BCCI twitter handle @BCCI.
Kohli has struck and short-arm jab off England medium Chris Waokes over the wide mid-on – a typical Kohli act of creating something unconventional, unexpected and yet classic. Others would have gone for a pull on the delivery. The shot that was beyond imagination for others was emulated by the rising Indian star Shubhman Gill few days later at the ICC Under-19 World Cup against Zimbabwe.
Kolhi has come a long way to be the batting sensation that he is now, and Gill has a long way to go. But the shot from the blade of the teenager’s bat that caught the imagination of the cricket world was put in a split frame with the Kohli classic by the BCCI and shared on its official twitter handle @BCCI with the caption  @imVkohli invents short-arm jab & @RealShubmanGill reproduces it #TeamIndia. The video has been the most watched for the year on the account.
