Cricket Australia, ABC extend 80-year association with 6-year extension deal

Cricket Australia has inked six-year radio partnership extension deals with the ABC, Macquarie Media Limited (MML) and Crocmedia. The new agreement will come into effect from the 2018-19 season and further extend the Cricket Australia’s 80-year-old association with its radio commentary partner.
The deals will provide the Australian cricket fans with access to more cricket content via live radio commentary and other ways to tune in than ever before, the Australian cricket board has stated in its official release.
Australian commercial media company Macquarie Radio, who won the rights as Cricket Australia’s primary radio partner, has sub-licensed the rights to both ABC and Crocmedia, a radio sports syndication network, who will host Australian cricket for the first time.
With ABC’s partnership with Cricket Australia – which spans more than 80 years –  will see the broadcaster increasing its number of broadcast matches.
The new agreements mean for the first time all Rebel Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) matches will receive national radio coverage together with continued coverage of all Commonwealth Bank Women’s Internationals, all Men’s Internationals and all KFC Big Bash League (BBL) matches.
ABC will continue its commitment to delivering national coverage of all Men’s International and Commonwealth Bank Women’s International cricket and for the first time will also provide coverage of every match of WBBL cricket, available across Australia via a mix of digital and AM/FM channels, in effect becoming the radio home of women’s cricket. The ABC will also call Prime Minister’s XI and Governor General’s XI matches, which will be available via digital channels.
The partnership with MML and Crocmedia will offer greater choice and greater reach to cricket fans on commercial radio across both metro and regional Australia. MML’s new dedicated Macquarie Sports Radio channel in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth will cover all Men’s and Commonwealth Bank Women’s Internationals and every match of the BBL, complemented with MML’s Perth 6PR AM broadcasting selected Men’s International matches and all Perth Scorcher matches.
Crocmedia will also hold the exclusive regional commercial radio rights to further expand cricket’s reach via their syndicated regional networks, and will also cover on SEN in Melbourne all Men’s Tests and all BBL matches.
Importantly, the deals grant digital streaming rights to radio partners to provide coverage above and beyond the traditional AM/FM channels. All matches broadcast as part of the radio rights deal will also be made available to stream via Cricket Australia’s digital platforms.
Cricket Australia CEO, James Sutherland, said the new radio rights agreements give fans great access to more forms of the game than ever before.
“We are excited to announce our new radio rights deals with the ABC, Macquarie Media and Crocmedia, which will deliver comprehensive coverage of international and Big Bash cricket to fans across Australia.
“We were very disappointed by inaccurate reporting this week suggesting that the ABC would no longer broadcast cricket. It undermined our commitment to the ABC and the ABC’s longstanding commitment to cricket.
“Never for a minute had it crossed our minds that the ABC was not a staple in the Australian cricketing summer.
“Radio has long been an important part of how people enjoy cricket in Australia over the summer, and the breadth and depth of these agreements ensures that people will be able to tune in to the cricket action regardless of where they are.
“In addition to continued commitments around the broadcast of Women’s International matches, it is pleasing to have secured radio coverage for all WBBL matches, a clear sign of the rapidly growing interest from fans for the competition.
“We are also excited to announce a new radio rights deal, which sees Macquarie Media return as a valued radio partner and Crocmedia also coming on board to complement cricket’s radio footprint via their extensive regional syndication network. We are now looking forward to working together with these partners to deliver fantastic coverage of our game and promote cricket to all Australians.”
The Managing Director of the ABC, Michelle Guthrie, said, “Cricket on ABC Radio is a big part of any Australian summer and I am really delighted we are continuing to forge a strong partnership with Cricket Australia to provide live commentary to as many Australians as possible.   I am also pleased ABC Radio will be the source of women’s cricket, with all matches of Women’s International and WBBL cricket broadcast live on one of our platforms which is a big win for audiences.”
Macquarie Media CEO Adam Lang said, “I am delighted that Macquarie Media’s association with Cricket Australia will continue. Our ‘Summer of Cricket’ commentary team has now become established as one of the favourite destinations for Cricket fans across all formats of the game.
“Our audiences love the passion, enthusiasm, insight and professionalism that the “Summer of Cricket” team brings and we look forward to growing that further throughout this new agreement”
Pacific Star Network Managing Director and Crocmedia’s Chief Executive Officer Craig Hutchison said, “Cricket on the radio is a right of passage and part of our culture in this country. It is a huge honour for Crocmedia and 1116 SEN  to be among those to take the responsibility moving forward.
“We thank CA for the opportunity and promise to live up to our end with a fresh perspective and contemporary coverage headed by Gerard Whateley. We congratulate Macquarie also and look forward to working with them and CA for the betterment of the game and its fans all around the country. “
The radio rights announcement follows Cricket Australia’s recent announcement of a landmark six-year broadcast partnership with FOX SPORTS and Seven West Media.
Rights Portfolio of the respective Radio agencies:
ABC – Commonwealth Bank Women’s Internationals, Men’s Internationals, Rebel Women’s Big Bash League, Prime Minister’s XI, Governor General’s XI
Macquarie Media Limited – Commonwealth Bank Women’s Internationals, Men’s Internationals, KFC Big Bash League
Crocmedia on SEN 1116 – Men’s Tests, KFC Big Bash League

Argentina vs Iceland: 4 reasons why minnows Iceland are fans favourite

It is a David versus Goliath story as mighty Argentina take on Iceland in their FIFA World Cup 2018 Group D match today (Saturday). The Lionel Messi-led Argentina are among the global football power houses. However, there are reasons good enough for fans to back minnows Iceland, too.
The opening match of Group D at Moscow’s Spartak Stadium will see opposites collide as FIFA World Cup veterans meet one of the tournament’s debutants. Two-time world champions and 2014 runners-up Argentina are in their 17th FIFA World Cup finals, while Iceland – the smallest of all 32 nations by population with just under 335,000 inhabitants – are making their first FIFA World Cup appearance ever.
Despite their vast experience and an attacking line-up led by Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria and Sergio Aguero, La Albiceleste have struggled for a ticket to Russia for the FIFA World Cup 2018. Jorge Sampaoli’s side had to wait till the match-winning hat-trick from Messi in their last FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifier against Ecuador.
Ireland, after reaching the quarter-finals of UEFA EURO 2016, have celebrated another major success by making it to the FIFA World Cup finals for the first time ever. Heimir Hallgrimsson’s men swept aside teams like Croatia, Ukraine and Turkey en route to Russia. Their campaign was all the more remarkable for its efficiency, with Iceland needing just 16 goals to qualify – fewer than any other group winner.
Fans and football pundits are terming this match as classic David vs Goaliath match. One team full of multi-millionarire stars and captained by the highest paid football player in Forbes’ top 100 highest paid athletes list this year. Other team comprises little-known faces of world football. Still, the team with no big names, without any great pedigree or tradition will start their FIFA World Cup 2018 journey as fan’s favourites.
But why? Here are the four strong reasons that drive fans sentiments to have a faith and belief in FIFA World Cup debutants.

FIFA World Cup 2018: Saudi Arabia not gracious in defeat, to penalise players

Authorities in Saudi Arabia are finding it hard to accept the 0-5 drubbing at the hand of hosts Russia in the FIFA World Cup 2018 opener on Thursday. The line of defence, including the goalkeeper, face penal action after the World Cup.
Saudi Arabia Football Federation president Adel Ezzat has gone on record, saying that three players will be punished for the 0-5 thrashing in their FIFA World Cup 2018 opening match.
Ezzat, according to media reports, has stated the team performance in Moscow well below expectations. The defeat has extended Saudi Arabia’s winless run at the FIFA World Cup to 11 games.
“We are very disappointed by the defeat. This result is totally unsatisfactory because it does not reflect the true level of our preparedness,” media reports have quoted Ezzat as saying.  “Several players will face a penalty – goalkeeper Abdullah Al-Mayouf, striker Mohammad Al-Sahlawi and defender Omar Hawsawi.”
General Sports Authority chairman Turki bin Abdulmohsen Al-Sheikh has also described the game as a ‘total fiasco’ in a video posted on his official Twitter handle. “These players have made my face go black with embarrassment and fury. This is down to their weak potential and ability. We did everything for this team and this generation of players, everything,” he states in the video.
“We brought them the best technical support, a team of the highest level and we paid them for three years. But now we see they have limited capabilities.
“They have achieved just five per cent of what is expected and required of them.”
The team will have to really give some outstanding performances to avoid the trouble back home as they face Uruguay on Wednesday and Egypt next for their last group game.

Sports Sponsorship: Belgium and ManU striker Romelu Lukaku signs Puma

Belgium and Manchester United footballer star has inked a long-term deal with German sportswear giant Puma. The signing comes ahead of his maiden campaign with his national against Panama on June 18 in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia
The deal marks an end to the 25-year-old’s long search for a boot sponsor after his agreement with Nike expired more than a year ago.
Lukaku, who is Belgium’s all-time leading goal scorer and the biggest hope of Belgium team in FIFA World Cup 2018, played the 2017/18 Premier League campaign without a boot sponsor, but spent most of the season sporting Adidas footwear. The deal with Puma kicks in immediately with this summer’s World Cup in Russia, which got underway on Thursday with an emphatic 5-0 win for the hosts against Saudi Arabia.
The move comes shortly after Lukaku joined US rapper Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports management company, with the agency creating the front and back of an album artwork to announce the deal on the former Everton man’s Instagram page.
Commenting on the partnership, Lukaku said: “Choosing an exclusive sportswear brand to work with is an important decision, not just for the boots on the pitch but for my goals and desires off of it. I look forward to hustling with the big cat in the future.”

Ronaldo vs Spain: Opens campaign with hat-trick; before closing tax dispute

It was a Ronaldo versus Spain Friday – on and off the field. On the field, Spain was at receiving end as the Portuguese star striker scored a jaw-dropping hat-trick to force a sensational draw. Off the field, Ronaldo will pay 20 million in taxes to settle the dispute with the Spanish department and avoid a possible jail term.
ON FIELD FIRST
A brilliant hat-trick by Ronaldo ensured that Portugal forces a draw against its fancied rivals, and the “mother of World Cup rivalries’ lives up to the hype around it. CR7 had put Portugal ahead twice in the quest as they chased their maiden World Cup win against arch-rivals Spain. On each occasion, Diego Costa restored parity. Spain had surged ahead on a Nacho goal and maintained the lead late into the game, only to lose the advantage when Ronaldo completed his hat-trick with a free kick and force an exciting draw.

Ambati Rayudu fails Yo-Yo test, set to be dropped from England tour

India captain Virat Kohli is all set to take part in the two-match T20 Internationals in Ireland after comfortably clearing the YoYo test but there was bad news for middle-order batsman Ambati Rayudu, who is set to be dropped after failing to attain required parameters here today.
Almost all the players including skipper Virat Kohli have comfortably cleared the qualifying mark for the YoYo test. Ambati Rayudu is the only player in the UK-bound squad, who has failed to clear the fitness test. His score is well below the permissible 16.1 set for the India and India A team. Rayudu will be dropped from the squad, a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Rayudu had made a comeback in the ODI squad after more than one and half years in wilderness largely on the back of his IPL performance.
It is learnt that Rayudu, who had a major role in Chennai Super Kings’ victorious IPL campaign, performed well below-par in the range of 14.
A lot of people were shocked as to how someone who has scored close to 600 runs in the IPL couldn’t maintain requisite fitness standard within three weeks of the tournament’s completion.
The UK-bound limited overs specialist were today summoned at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for the customary YoYo Test with Kohli, MS Dhoni, Bhuvneshwar Kumar taking the test in the first batch.
Kohli didn’t look in any discomfort while taking the advanced beep test as he matched Dhoni step for step along with Bhuvneshwar, Kedar Jadhav and Suresh Raina.
Incidentally Raina, who was one of the first players last year to have flunked the YoYo test (along with Yuvraj Sigh), has comfortably cleared it this time round.
It will be interesting to see who gets a chance in the ODI squad as Rayudu is now set to be dropped.

TOPS Scheme : Yuki Bhambri sticks to US Open plans, slams ministry for exclusion

Yuki Bhambri is aghast at being excluded from the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) after preferring the US Open over Asian Games even as a red-faced All India Tennis Association (AITA) said it is trying to convince the Sports Ministry to reconsider its decision.
AITA had exempted the country’s top singles player considering that playing at the Grand Slams is crucial to secure ranking points, which would earn the Delhi player a direct entry into the Tokyo Olympics.
“We have asked the government to reconsider the decision and include both Yuki and Leander Paes in TOPS. We told them that Yuki needs to be in top-64 to earn direct qualification for Tokyo Olympics and that’s why playing at the US Open is important,” AITA secretary Hironmoy Chatterjee told PTI.
“They told us that when Yuki gets back to playing Davis Cup, his case would be re-examined,” he added.

FIFA World Cup 2018: Nike shoe pinches Iran at crucial moment

Iran goes into their FIFA World Cup 2018 opener today (Friday) against Morocco at the St. Petersburg with the Nike shoes “hurting them the most”.
The US footwear, sports apparel and athleisure brand Nike had stopped supplying Iran’s football team with game shoes just ahead of the World Cup following the US sanctions against the Islamic State.
Nike in a Statement had said the company was forbidden from supplying kit to the Iranian team as it prepares for its opening World Cup game.
“US sanctions mean that, as a US company, Nike cannot supply shoes to players in the Iranian national team at this time,” the company has stated in a statement published by ESPN. “Sanctions applicable to Nike have been in place for many years and are enforceable by law.”
According to the US Treasury, any US entity found in violation of sanctions could face hefty fines.
Iran coach Carlos Queiroz had earlier called on Nike to apologize to his team after the U.S. sportswear firm said it could not supply the players with football boots for the World Cup due to sanctions.

Pakistan Super League: PCB plans 8 games at home, UAE to be main venue

The Pakistan Cricket Board, in its latest move, has revealed plans to shift eight games of the Pakistan Super league Season 4 to home venues.
PCB has said that eight matches will be held at home during the next edition (2019) of its franchisee-based T20 league. However, United Arab Emirates will continue to be the main venue for the event despite concerns over competition with other tournaments in the region.
The attack on Sri Lanka’s team bus by gunmen in Lahore in March 2009 has forced Pakistan to play the majority of its ‘home’ series in the UAE, but the PCB is stepping up its efforts to slowly reintroduce its events to Pakistan. Staging of the PSL games Lahore and Karachi earlier this year has given a boost to the PCB plans to host international teams in the country.
A PSL governing council meeting has now expressed “full confidence” in the PCB’s attempts to bring more PSL matches to Pakistan, deciding that at least eight matches will be held in the country next year.
Earlier this month, the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) had revealed plans for a new Twenty20 league which it claims will be the most innovative and inclusive in the world. With a 10-year sanctioning agreement for the venture by the International Cricket Council (ICC), ECB has said that the new tournament will make its debut in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah with five new franchise teams vying for the inaugural title in a 22-match format over 24 days in December and January.
ECB further said that six ICC full member nations – England, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, New Zealand and the West Indies – have supported the project. PCB, which was concerned by the potential fixture clash, was notably absent from the list of ECB’s T20 league supporters.
However, other media reports have suggested that PCB has reached a deal with the ECB and retained the UAE as the venue for its ‘home’ season. The ECB will reportedly avoid scheduling other tournaments with Pakistan’s home series, and agreed to keep the PSL as the exclusive cricket event held in the UAE during this period.
“Eventually the whole PSL will come back to Pakistan one day, but at this stage it’s not feasible. With every passing year, things are improving and, from the first to the third edition, we have continued to have more games in Pakistan. Next year eight or more games will come to Pakistan,” PCB chairman Najam Sethi was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

FIFA World Cup 2018 : Spain-Portugal LIVE on Sony Ten, Sony ESPN, Sony LIV

One of the fiercest FIFA World Cup rivalries, Spain versus Portugal is scheduled for 11.30 pm (IST) today (Friday). For all football fans, the live action in India is available across five channels in six languages and many more digital platforms.
A veritable clash of the titans, this match pits two FIFA World Cup title contenders against each other right from the outset. Although the neighbouring nations are old foes, this will be only their second-ever meeting on football’s greatest stage, after a tense Round-of-16 duel in South Africa from which the Spaniards emerged victorious (1-0). All in all, the two countries have met on 35 occasions, with Spain boasting 18 wins to Portugal’s six. Their recent record has been fairly even, with Portugal claiming two wins and Spain three.
They have not played each other since Spain won 4-2 on penalties, after a goalless 90 minutes, in the Euro 2012 semi-finals La Roja, who had built up significant momentum prior to their arrival in Russia and appear to have found the perfect balance between youth and experience, may therefore have a slight psychological advantage, but it is as yet unclear what impact their decision to sack coach Julen Lopetegui just two days away from their opening match will have.
At the other end of the pitch, the reigning European champions, with Cristiano Ronaldo more determined than ever to make a mark on the tournament, are unlikely to come bearing gifts.

FIFA World Cup 2026: After ‘United Bid’ success, Africa seeks ‘rotation system’ for hosting rights

The African nations are calling for a “rotation policy” to decide on the rights to host the FIFA World Cup games. The demand is raised after Morocco has lost its bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup to a combined bid by the USA, Mexico and Canada.
After Morocco’s crushing defeat for the hosting rights to 2026 FIFA World Cup, various top football officials from African sub-continent have come in support to call on FIFA for reintroducing a rotation system for the FIFA World Cup hosting bid.
Morocco was defeated by the joint bid proposal from the football associations of Canada, Mexico and United States to host the 2026 edition of the WorldCup. The 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow held on the eve of FIFA World Cup 2018 had overwhelmingly voted in favour of the United Bid. The United 2026 bid had garnered 67% of the votes from 204 member nations at the Congress.
The World Cup has only been staged in Africa for once when South Africa played host to the 2010 edition. Morocco also unsuccessfully bid to host the 1994, 1998, 2006 and 2010 tournaments.

Football fans in India are rooting for their “Doosri Country” in the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia. The frenzy is ignited further by latest heroics of the Indian football captain Suni Chhetri and his teams during the Inter Continental Cup triumph.
A latest survey reveals that Indian football fans are more passionate about the FIFA World Cup 2018 than the supporters from the most of the 32 countries taking part in the FIFA World Cup 2018.

Russians, who have bought the maximum 872,578 tickets, will have the strongest presence during the FIFA World Cup matches. However, the survey reveals that a mere 9% people from the host nation are passionate about the World Cup – the number is the lowest among the 27 nations covered in the survey.
Indian fans are also positioned third among the World Cup ticket buyers from the non-participating nations. Indian fans have bought 17,692 World Cup tickets. So is the rest of India watch the World Cup.
A majority 61% in India will watch the World Cup action live on television. Internet will attract 45% of the Indians for the World Cup live content, while mobile (32%), tablet (15%) and radio (8%) are the other options for the Indian football fans.
