Authorities in Saudi Arabia are finding it hard to accept the 0-5 drubbing at the hand of hosts Russia in the FIFA World Cup 2018 opener on Thursday. The line of defence, including the goalkeeper, face penal action after the World Cup.
Saudi Arabia Football Federation president Adel Ezzat has gone on record, saying that three players will be punished for the 0-5 thrashing in their FIFA World Cup 2018 opening match.
Ezzat, according to media reports, has stated the team performance in Moscow well below expectations. The defeat has extended Saudi Arabia’s winless run at the FIFA World Cup to 11 games.
“We are very disappointed by the defeat. This result is totally unsatisfactory because it does not reflect the true level of our preparedness,” media reports have quoted Ezzat as saying. “Several players will face a penalty – goalkeeper Abdullah Al-Mayouf, striker Mohammad Al-Sahlawi and defender Omar Hawsawi.”
General Sports Authority chairman Turki bin Abdulmohsen Al-Sheikh has also described the game as a ‘total fiasco’ in a video posted on his official Twitter handle. “These players have made my face go black with embarrassment and fury. This is down to their weak potential and ability. We did everything for this team and this generation of players, everything,” he states in the video.
“We brought them the best technical support, a team of the highest level and we paid them for three years. But now we see they have limited capabilities.
“They have achieved just five per cent of what is expected and required of them.”
The team will have to really give some outstanding performances to avoid the trouble back home as they face Uruguay on Wednesday and Egypt next for their last group game.
