It is Super Sunday in the FIFA World Cup 2018. The day when two of the world’s most successful football teams will start their FIFA World Cup 2018 campaign. Germany meet Mexico in a Group F match, a befitting Super Sunday opener for defending champions. Five-time champions Brazil will open their Russia 2018 campaign against Switzerland in the Group E encounter. The Super Sunday magic will be live on Sony Ten & Sony ESPN channels in India with live digital streaming on Sony LIV platforms.
SUPER SUNDAY – 1st MATCH
Costa Rica vs Serbia @ 5.30 PM IST
The first match of Super Sunday at FIFA World Cup 2018 will be played between Costa Rica and Serbia. The Group E encounter between the not too popular teams of the World Cup will start at 5.30 PM IST in Cosmos Arena.
SUPER SUNDAY – 2nd MATCH
Germany vs Mexico @ 8.30 PM IST
The second match of Super Sunday is what every football fan will be waiting for. The match where defending champions Germany will be LIVE in action starts at a perfect time (8.30 PM IST) for Indian football fans and the official FIFA World Cup 2018 broadcaster in the country – Sony Sports Cluster. The German will open their pursuit to retain the title Mexico. All eyes will be on defending champions Germany as they return to football’s biggest stage with all the potential to retain the golden FIFA World Cup trophy. With a team that is as strong as the one that lifted the World Cup trophy four years ago in Brazil, Die Mannschaft will be looking to become the first country since Brazil in 1962 to be back-to-back champions.
Germany open their Group F account against Mexico at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow at 8.30 PM IST on Sunday June 17. Mexico have have never progressed past the quarter-finals at the FIFA World Cup finals stage will be looking to give the defending champions a run for their money. Though Germany – guided by long-term manager Joachim Low – always field a consistently strong squad.
The Germans will, however, have to break the recent trend. The champions in the previous three World Cups have fared miserably in their title defence four years later. The 2014 Champions from Brazil will have the challenge to avoid the ‘Champions Curse’. Fans in India can catch the match Live on Sony Ten, Sony ESPN & Sony LIV platforms.
SUPER SUNDAY – 3RD MATCH
Brazil vs Switzerland @ 11.30 PM IST
FIFA World Cup 2018, Super Sunday will become more special with some Samba magic in the last encounter of the day-night to be more precise. The Rostov Arean will provide a spectacular setting for the second match in Group E at the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia. One of the top contenders Brazil run into Switzerland, who are the only side in the history to have beaten eventual World Cup champions in their opening match.
The match starts late at night at 11.30 PM India time. Brazil is the “Meri Doosri Country” for a majority of Indian football fans. Sony Ten, Sony ESPN & digital streaming on Sony LIV platforms will also be looking this game to set a benchmark for FIFA World Cup 2018 late night games audience numbers.
Sunday’s game marks the return of the Brazilians to the World Cup stage following their traumatic campaign on home soil in 2014. It took them full two years to recover from the disappointing experience, with the arrival of the wily Tite in the dugout in the middle of 2016. Tite restored a sense of calm in the team. In revitalising the side and finding the right blend, he ensured they were the first South American side to reach Russia 2018. Such was the scale of his overhaul of the squad that the five-time world champions have only six players with World Cup experience in their ranks.
The dependable Swiss have lost just once since 2016 and only exited UEFA EURO 2016 on penalties. Though they had to go through the play-offs to qualify, Switzerland put together an excellent campaign in the European preliminaries and know what it takes to impress against a big-name team in an opening match, having beaten eventual champions Spain in their first outing at South Africa 2010.
Quite a cracker of match. Catch it Live on Sony Ten, Sony ESPN & digital streaming on Sony LIV platforms @ 11.30 PM IST.
