More than 10,000 fake tickets have been sold globally for the FIFA World Cup 2018 matches in Russia. Of these 3,500 counterfeit tickets have been sold to the Chinese football fans alone.
Chinese news portal Thecover.cn, referring to the Russian embassy in China, has reported that the government was investigating a Russian company for selling more than 3,500 fake FIFA World Cup 2018 tickets to Chinese football fans and travel agents. Over 10,000 such tickets are sold globally.
Even as the Chinese national team had failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia, the nation has a strong corporate and brand presence around the tournament. Football fans from China has bought an estimated 40 thousand tickets for football’s grandest 32-day carnival.
The embassy notice had stated that the “Anzhi Company” from Russia claimed to have obtained written approval to sell tickets from the World Cup Russia organising committee but the letter turned out to be fake, Thecover.cn has reported.
After the reports have gone viral overseas on the Chinese news portals the notice has since been removed from embassy’s social media channel.
More than 1,000 of the fake tickets have been sold in Chengdu alone. The counterfeit ticket scam is also reported in Chongqing.
Meanwhile, Chongqing Morning Post has reported that more than 90 Chinese football fans from Chongqing would not be able to attend the World Cup matches as their travel agents have ordered counterfeit tickets from a Russian website. On Saturday about 30 Chongqing tourists were denied entry to the Argentina and Iceland match in Moscow.
