Haryana to honour 98 sports persons, including CWG medallists

Haryana Government has now initiated a move to honour sportspersons in the State. The 98 strong list also includes 22 Commonwealth Games medallists from the State. The players will now also be given cash awards as per State policy.
The State Government is reportedly compelled to soften its stand against athletes after the rival Indian National Lokdal had announced to organise a State level function to honour the meritorious athletes. Amidst the politics around sports, the State government has initiated the move by clearing the file for cash awards to 98 athletes. The Sports Department has reportedly forwarded to the Sports Minster.
The cash award will be transferred directly to the players’ respective accounts before the scheduled INLD function in August. All the 22 CWG medallists from Haryana will receive the cash award irrespective of their employment affiliations. The latest move is a complete U-turn on Haryana governments’ stand on the top sportspersons from the State.
Earlier this month, the Chief Minister had to intervene and suspend an order by the State Sports Department, which had directed the athletes employed with the Haryana Government departments and other affiliated bodies to share their professional revenues from other sources with the State.
The order issued by Khemka’s office reads: “The Government of Haryana is pleased to notify the following conditions governing the participation of sportspersons in professional sports or commercial endorsements and employed in any department of the State Government or anybody controlled by the State:
“The sportspersons shall be accorded extraordinary leave (without pay) during the said period. One-third income earned by the sportspersons from professional sports or commercial endorsements will be deposited with the Haryana State Sports Council. The money shall be used for the development of sports in the State.
“In case the sportsperson is treated on duty with the prior approval of the competent authority while taking part in professional sports or commercial endorsements, the full income earned by the sportsperson on this account will be deposited with the Haryana State Sports Council.”
Haryana government and athletes from the State were also at loggerheads shortly after the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The State had then cancelled the felicitation and awards ceremony over protests by some of the top athletes. After having announced lucrative awards to the CWG medallists, the State Government had then refused to consider the athletes employed with central government bodies and other undertakings.
