LaLiga announces revenue increase from domestic, international rights sales

LaLiga has announced an increase in revenue from the sales of domestic and international media rights package.
LaLiga has announced deals with Spanish telecos Telefonica and Mediapro after the first round of the audiovisual rights sale in Spain for the 2019-20 to 2021-22 seasons. The organising body of the top two divisions of Spanish club football has reported revenue rises of 15% and 30%, respectively, for the sale of domestic and international rights packages.
Following a tender process that was launched in Spain and Andorra last month for rights to LaLiga and the second-tier Segunda División, LaLiga has announced the partial sale of eight packages for the three seasons spanning 2019-20 to 2021-22.
Of the eight lots put out to tender, none reached the reserve price. However, LaLiga decided to provisionally award four lots (2, 4, 5 and 7) pending the signing of the relevant contracts.
The total amount for these four lots for the three-year period from 2019-20 to 2021-22 was €3.421 billion ($4.54 billion) at an average of €1.140 billion ($ 1.51 billion) per season, which consists of a 15% increase on the four equivalent lots for the previous three-year period (€2.978 billion /$ 3.9). Furthermore, the Copa del Rey and the 2nd Division are not included in Lots 4, 5 and 7 for the upcoming three-year period (whilst they were to some extent in the previous three-year period).
Telefónica has acquired lots four and five. Lot four is composed of one match on every LaLiga matchday for free-to-air or pay-television on an exclusive basis with first choice. The package also includes the six matches of the playoffs for promotion to LaLiga on a non-exclusive basis, as well as non-exclusive highlights of all LaLiga and Segunda División matches.
Lot five consists of LaLiga TV Channel or equivalent content. This comprises eight matches from each LaLiga matchday for pay-television on an exclusive basis, with third choice. The six matches of the playoffs for promotion to LaLiga, for pay-television on a non-exclusive basis, and non-exclusive highlights of all first and second-tier matches.
LaLiga has said in its official statement that it is confident that the lots which have not been awarded in this first round will be awarded satisfactorily in the coming months.
In addition, LaLiga has extended its contract with International Marketing Agency Mediapro) for the sale of the international audiovisual rights during the next five seasons (2019/20 to 2023/24). LaLiga is guaranteed €4.485 billion in revenue from international audiovisual rights during the next five seasons, which is 30% more than in the previous three-year period.
LaLiga has further added that the income of the clubs from the sale of the audiovisual rights will allow them to have great players, better infrastructure, etc. for the enjoyment of the fans.
LaLiga president Javier Tebas commented, “satisfied because this outcome is positive for all those who directly or indirectly form part of the Spanish football industry. The clubs, successful broadcasters, sponsors and, in particular, football fans all come out as winners in this tender.”
