Sergei Ignashevich, the highest capped Russian footballer (127 caps), has announced his retirement, putting an end to his illustrious international andclub career simultaneously.
Sergei made his international debut in 2002. The central defender played a crucial role in Russia’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals, playing all of the 5 matches before the team made their exit in the quartr-finals.
The Russian manager Stanislav Cherchesov was all praise for the central defender, even suggesting him to reconsider his retirement decision. Sergeihas scored nine goals for his country over the span of 16 years.
Sergei had started his professional club career with Znayma Truda in the year 1999 and ended it with CSKA Moscow, whom he captained to UEFA Europa Cup glory in the year 2005, and the Russian Premier League titles from 2012 to 2016.
Sergei decided to quit on a high after Russia was celebrating the team’s great display in the World Cup finals at home before their exit in the quarter-finals.
