Cristiano Ronaldo is reported to have reached an understanding with tax authorities in Spain. The former Real Madrid star, suggest reports, will plead guilty and agree on a settlement to end tax evasion case.
He will reportedly pay a fine of close to €19 million ($22 million) for a reduced prison sentence, which will be suspended. Spain’s Tax Office has accepted the deal that will clear Ronaldo of the tax dispute and a possible jail term.
The judiciary in Spain is empowered to suspend the jail term of two years or a lesser time period in case of a first-time offence. Reports suggest that Ronaldo had closed the tentative deal the State prosecutor’s office. The agreement now needs to be signed by Spain’s tax authorities.
In 2016, Barcelona forward Lionel Messi had received a suspended 21-month jail sentence after being found guilty of defrauding tax authorities of 4.1 million euros (then $4.6 million).
State prosecutor in Spain had last year accused Ronaldo of four counts of tax fraud from 2011-14. His tax liability was estimated to be €14.7 million ($16.5 million). He is accused of using shell companies to conceal his income from sponsorships and endorsements. The amount did not include Ronaldo’s salary from Real Madrid. Ronaldo, however, had denied all charges when questioned by the judge about the tax fraud.
Ronaldo left Madrid this month to sign for Italian champions Juventus. The Portuguese football icon likely to make his debut for Juventus at Chievo Verona as the club will kick off their campaign for a record-extending eighth Serie A title. Juventus will soon after play another derby match, at city rival Torino.
The 2018-19 Serie A fixtures were announced on Thursday. The new season is scheduled to start on August 18.
