In a first, LaLiga TV, the official TV channel of the top division of Italian football, has moved beyond football and added handball to its broadcast content portfolio.
LaLiga TV has acquired rights to Liga Asobal, the top tier premier professional handball league in Spain. The terms and financial details of the deal, signed at the LaLiga headquarters, were not revealed.
Liga Asobal has said it was the most important commercial contract for them in the 34-year history of its existence. It also said that the two parties will work together in the development and promotion of handball in the audiovisual business.
LaLiga TV will broadcast 130 Liga Asobal matches per season on a free-to-air basis, including the Supercopa, Copa Asobal and Final 8 of the Copa del Rey.
Liga Asobal has further stated: “The great desire that the world of Spanish handball has had to have ASOBAL matches in open, being accepted for the clubs, has been achieved. This will make the clubs grow the value of their current sponsors and facilitate the task of finding new ones, the consideration of their administrations, the knowledge of their players and for all the growth of the handball product.
“The alliance with LaLiga will help us to give a boost to the promotion of handball and at a level that has never been done before. Although it is not the most important (factor), but also very necessary in the times we live in, the economic aspect of the contract exceeds in quantity, conditions and duration to anything we have had before.”
LaLiga is among the few football bodies around the globe to own and operate its own TV channel. Last month, the Portuguese Football Federation has become the latest to join the roster by announcing the launch of its own TV channel, to be named “11”, by next year.
Among the few European clubs that own their TV channels include Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal from English Premier League; Spanish LaLiga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona; FC Porto, SL Benfica and Sporting Club de Portugal from Portugal’s Premeira Liga; and Celtic from Scottish Premier League.
