Conmebol, the governing body of football in South America, has inked a VAR technology deal with Mediapro.
The partnership will see the Spanish media agency becoming the official supplier of video assistant referees (VAR) technology thereby expanding its market presence in the nascent sports technology used for the first time in the recently concluded FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia.
Mediapro will provide VAR technology for Conmebol competitions through to the end of 2019. The contract will include the flagship national team tournament Copa America to be hosted by Brazil next year.
The deal also includes Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana and Recopa Sudamericana club competitions.
Conmebol previously trialled VAR during the semi-finals and final of the 2017 Copa Libertadores. Mediapro last month served notice to step up its business in the sector after registering the ‘VAR’ phrase as a brand throughout Europe.
The company has agreed deals to deliver the VAR system to La Liga – the top tier of Spanish soccer, Portugal’s Primeira Liga and Liga MX, the premier division of Mexican soccer.
The Fifa World Cup 2018 was the first edition of the football’s most coveted event to use the VAR and had received positive response despite pre-event fears and criticism. VAR, during the month long event in Russia, had reviewed 19 decisions in the 62 matches up to the final, correcting 16 refereeing decisions which were proved to be wrong.
