Esports: Fortnite Battle Royale makes over $1 billion, shatters streaming viewership records

Fortnite Battle Royale game has made over $1 billion while shattering all streaming viewership records.
Popular free-to-play video game Fortnite Battle Royale, developed by North Carolina-based gamed developers Epic Games has raked in over a whopping $1 billion making it one of the most successful Battle Royale games – a genre that blends the survival, exploration and scavenging elements of a survival game with last-man-standing gameplay.
According to the data from SuperData, a video game and esports market intelligence firm, Fortnite Battle Royale has been estimated to have earned more than US$1 billion in microtransactions since its release in September last year. The game, in April and May, brought in $296 million and $318 million respectively.
With over 125 million players and record streaming viewerships and praise from several celebrities and athletes, Fortnite Battle Royale has become a cultural phenomenon, and among the dominant leaders in the global video games and esports industry.
The same report by SuperData also reveals the meteoric rise of the Battle Royale genre, which surpasses every other genre when it comes to hours spent watching streams – with Fortnite leading the pack by a staggering gap.
Viewers, in the month of May, have watched 700 million hours of Battle Royale games, of which 83% were spent watching Fortnite. The chart below reveals the rising popularity of Battle Royale video game genre which includes some of the top-notch titles like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG).

The games phenomenal success has been attributed to the factors like the ease of playing, user-friendly controls and interface as well as availability over a plethora of platforms and consoles ranging from Windows, macOS, PS4, Xbox One Nintendo Switch, Andriod and iOS.
Fortnite Battle Royale, according to the firm, is leading the charts among the top ten video games available for console, leaving behind popular titles like FIFA 18, Call of Duty: WWII, Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 5 and God of War.
When it comes to PC games, it sits at the fifth spot behind league of Legends, Dungeon Fighter Online, Crossfire, Fantasy Westward Journey Online II. The game, however, is ahead of its genre-rival PUBG that holds the ninth position among the top ten.
It has, however, failed to make a cut among the top ten mobile games till date, most probable reason of which could be that it was announced recently this year. The iOS version was launched on April 2 whereas the Android counterpart went underway in the markets last month only.
