Quarter-finals, Saturday, July 7:
Defending champions Germany could not progress beyond the Group stage and sentimental favourites Argentina, Portugal crashed out at the first knockout hurdle. Uruguay, even after having such a strong defence could not stop the young and skilful French team from scoring, and the lack of their star forward Edinson Cavani certainly hurt them as they went down conceding two to France while failing to score even a single goal.
In the second and the most anticipated quarter-final between Brazil and Belgium, the Red Devils came out quick of the blocks and scored two, one courtesy an Own goal from Brazil and another one a sublime strike from star mid-fielder Kevin De Bruyne. The charismatic attack of Brazil could only pull one back as even the Favorites went out of the World Cup. Thus, setting up a semi-final showdown between France and Belgium.
The third quarter-final will be played between England and Sweden. The “three lions” will be going in as the strong favourites to win the match. And with their captain Harry Kane in such prolific goal-scoring form, it will surely be a very hard task for the Swedish defence to cope-up with him. In the last quarter-final, the hosts Russia will be taking on Croatia. No one expected the host to reach this far ahead in the tournament but defying all odds they managed to conquer Spain, thus giving them a lot of confidence. Croatia, on the other hand, will be relying on their star mid-field duo of Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic to help them get through this tricky encounter. The semi-final line-up for the World Cup 2018 will be confirmed today.
