The recurrent reports of news reporters getting harassed and molested at the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia have sparked global sexual harassment debate on the internet.
Days after the Colombian female reporter Julieth González Therán’s video surfaced on the internet which saw her getting groped and kissed by a Russian male while she was reporting live, a Korean male reporter underwent a similar ordeal on June 28 – this time two Russian girls kissing his cheeks when he was reporting live.
This has got the global football fans on Internet debating over sexual harassment. The fans are also disgruntled, as they took it out on various social media platforms, about the gender bias perceived when the two incidents were compared.
According to a report by the BBC, the incident took place in Russia on June 28, while Jeon Gwang-ryeol, a reporter with South Korean TV channel MBN, was kissed on his cheek twice by the Russian female football fans.
The Korean stopped as he looked disconcerted. Even as he laughed off the incident, it nonetheless got the Internet arguing over whether this could be categorised as sexual harassment or not.
Earlier, Julieth González Therán from German broadcaster Deutsche Welle’s Spanish news channel went through a harrowing ordeal as she was groped and kissed by an unknown Russian fan. She had posted a video of the incident on her official Instagram account. The man is said to have issued an apology to her later.
“I had been at the scene for two hours to prepare for the broadcast and there had been no interruptions,” she told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle. “When we went live, this fan took advantage of the situation. But afterwards, when I checked to see if he was still there, he was gone.”
