Manchester City has spent almost €1 billion (€ 976 million to be precise) in transfer indemnities to sign its present squad members. The figures released by the CIES Football Observatory also include ad-ons like the agent fee.
The amount pledged by the Premier League champions is the highest ever measured for a football team. This is almost 1,000 time more than the four bottom place clubs would be spending on their respective teams for the season; and nearly 25% more than the second-placed Paris St. Germain.
According to the data released in the 233rd issue of the CIES Football Observatory Weekly Post, France’s top division Ligue 1 champions Paris St. Germain have committed €766 million in transfer indemnities.
Manchester City and PSG were also in the top two positions last season for their respective indemnities amounting to €853 million and €850 million respectively. The Premier League Champions have raised their team spent by 15%, the French top division champions PSG has slashed the team-building expenditure by 5%.
La Liga giants Real Madrid are the other top eleven club to have slashed their spending from the previous season – €497 million for 2017-18 to € 447 million now.
Seven English Premier League teams are in the 11 top positions of the table. The biggest increase compared to last year was measured for Liverpool (from €437M to €704M).
The top 11 chart has Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, Serie A champions Juventus and Paris St-Germain as the non-English clubs. The best-ranked German Bundesliga club Bayern Munich is in the 12th.
Total transfer expenditure to make up the squad for clubs from the five major European leagues went constantly up during the last decade. In 2010, a big-5 league club had spent on an average €67M to sign their squad members. In 2018, this figure has reached a new record high of €161M.
During the same period, the amounts invested to assemble the squad by English Premier League clubs have gone up by 160% – from €126M to €326M.
