The Delhi Government has facilitated Asian Games gold medal winner tennis player Divij Sharan. The player was presented with a cheque of ₹1 crore.
This is for the first time that the Delhi Government has decided to visit the players in their respective areas to individually felicitate them in the middle of the people of the area.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal felicitated Asian Games gold medallist Divij Sharan at Safdarjung Club on Tuesday and handed him a cheque for ₹ 1 crore prize money.
Sharan’s coach too was honoured at the event and presented with a cash reward of ₹6 lakh.
Doing away with the earlier tradition of invite all the players to the Delhi Secretariat for State honours, the State Government for the first time has decided to visit the players in their respective areas to individually felicitate them in the middle of the people of the area.
The felicitation ceremonies for the other athletes who have returned with medals from the Asian Games will continue with functions taking place in their respective areas.
The Delhi Government has also enhanced the prize money for the players who won medal at Asian Games. The player will now receive ₹ 1 crore, ₹ 75 lakh and ₹ 50 lakh for winning a gold, silver and bronze respectively. The amount has been enhanced from the earlier figures of ₹ 20 lakh, ₹ 14 lakh and ₹ 10 lakh respectively.
Divij along with Rohan Bopanna had won the gold medal in men’s doubles tennis event at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang,
