Formula 1 unveils images of 2021 season concept cars to enhance race attractiveness

World’s most coveted motorsport racing series Formula 1 has unveiled concept images of cars for 2021 season as a part of radical changes ahead of the expiration of the seventh Concorde Agreement in 2020.
Formula 1 has revealed three different concepts for 2021 season cars which, apart from being visually striking and aesthetically pleasing, form an aspect of important regulation changes to make the races more exciting, competitive and attractive to the fans.
F1’s Managing Director of Motorsports Ross Brawn outlined the objectives ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix. “When we started looking at the 2021 car, the primary objective was to enable the cars to race well together,” Brawn said “What we established early on in our research is the cars we have now are very bad in following each other.”
Brawn, a former Mercedes team principal, told reporters at the Singapore Grand Prix that the intention was to develop cars that are “more raceable” and that fans would be eager to stick pictures of the new vehicles up on their walls.
The aim of the concept design is to reduce how following closely a car ahead affects its aerodynamic efficiency. Estimating that the current regulations mean a 50 per cent reduction in downforce in this situation, Brawn says the new regulation has improved this by 30 per cent, so that a car only loses 20 per cent downforce.
Brawn said that he had been working with teams and the motorsport world governing body FIA to develop new aerodynamics that would enable cars to follow each other at shorter distances without a loss of performance. He also hopes these designs will encourage new teams and manufacturers to join the sport in the coming years.
“We want to create an environment where there is a queue of people wanting to join F1. The encouraging thing when Force India ran into trouble was that it had a number of suitors that wanted to buy it. If you remember Manor a few years previously couldn’t sell the team. I think the confidence in F1 has since increased. We definitely want to have a queue of people that want to come into F1,” he said.
The concept will be chosen by the end of 2019 following atleast 12-15 months of research and development.

“We want cars that look better than what you see in a video game, cars that kids want to have up on their walls. At each stage, as we have been evolving the car, we’ve had someone we are working with create a graphic representation artist to give us a feel of what the car could look like,” he said.
“That is not to control the development, because it’s critical this development achieves its objectives, but why shouldn’t we have great looking cars as we’re evolving the cars? We want a car that is inspiring. F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport and the car should look sensational,” he added.

The futuristic concept are a major overhaul on the previous year’s regulations and design. All concepts also try and incorporate the halo which became a part of the latest regulation ahead of the start of 2018-19 season.

As per the latest designs, larger profile wheels are another change that will potentially be introduced in the post-2020 regulation changes. Pirelli’s current contract as sole supplier for F1 expires in 2020, a year before the massive changes will be introduced.
