The Indian Olympic Association has announced cash awards to the medal winners of the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang.
IOA will give each gold medallist a cheque of ₹ 5 lakh, silver medallist ₹3 lakh and bronze medallist ₹2 lakh at a ceremony in the Capital on September 23.
Secretary general Rajeev Mehta has said that the IOA will continue its cash awards programme for the future events. “There’s always a first time and this is the start of a new trend in the IOA. We will be rewarding the Asiad medallists since they have done the country proud,” he said. However, the medal winners at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games will not be considered under the scheme.
Indian athletes returned with the highest ever 69 medals from the Jakarta and Palembang Asian Games – 15 gold, 24 silver and 30 bronze.
The IOA it is reported will disburse money raised from sponsors to disburse cash reward to the Asian Games medallists.
As a State policy, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has also presented the Asian Games medallists with cash rewards. The gold medallists were given ₹40 lakh, while silver and bronze winners had received ₹20 and ₹10 lakh each respectively.
Various State Governments also have a policy of giving cash awards to their respective athletes who win medals at international events. Haryana provide the best cash incentive of ₹3 crore to the athletes from the State who win gold medals at multi-discipline at international events. The Delhi Government too has enhanced the highest prize to ₹1 crore to its champion athletes.
