WIN THAT COST $662 MN
The win over Columbia via penalty shootout in the round of 16 had cost the British economy an astronomical $662 million. The English football fans rooted for their team, cheering and celebrating as the Three Lions edged past Columbia in the penalty shoot-out. Next morning, the Queen’s Country was in a hangover. Almost two million people did not turn out to their offices, amounting to a loss of ₹4,554 crore to the country’s exchequer.
As England won their first World Cup Finals Penalty Shoot-out against Colombia, people back home stayed up late watching and drinking to celebrate the victory.
But the England football teams and fans gain has been a big loss to the employers in the country. An estimated two million people called in sick the next day and did not report for their jobs. The reason being termed as heat wave by their met department was quickly countered by the fact that people were still hung over England’s victory over Columbia and the late night celebrations forced them to call in sick the next day.
As reported by Bright HR, a London based Human Resource firm sick leaves were at a staggering 300% the day after England came through against Tunisia, and this number notched up to 400% with the win over Columbia. Employees not being able to work due to hangover caused an approximate loss of ₹ 4,554 crores.
