China seeks Aamir Khan presence at Asian Wrestling Championships

Aamir Khan presence at Asian Wrestling Championships

The Aamir Khan- starrer wrestling thriller Dangal has made a bigger impact in China than it did in India.
The film based on Indian international wrestlers Geeta and Babita in the backdrop of their father Mahavir Phogat’s resolve and struggle behind their success has been among the top celluloid grocers in China. The film that netted over ₹ 1,300 crores in China has made Aamir Khan, who played Mahavir Phogat, in the movie such a big star among the Chinese wrestling fraternity that they are seeking his presence at the Asian Wrestling Championship next year.
China will host the senior Asian Wrestling Championship in February and the country’s governing body for the sport is requesting the Wrestling Federation of India to ensure Mr Perfectionist’s appearance at the event.
According to national daily The Tribune, Zhang Ye, who is a member of United World Wrestling’s technical commission and a member of the Asian Associated Wrestling Council, has requested the WFI several times to bring Aamir to the event.
The WFI president, Mr Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has reportedly assured the Chinese authorities that he would make the best possible effort to get Aamir Khan for the event.
“The Chinese are very keen to have Aamir Khan’s presence during the event. They have approached us twice already. They said they will be happy if the superstar comes for a day as that would make it a successful event,” Tribune has quoted an anonymous source as saying.
The Chinese Wrestling Association also asked whether the Phogat sisters will be part of the Indian contingent for the Continental Championships. “They were told that there is a trial system to select the team in India and if Phogat sisters win the trials they will surely come,” he added.
After the success of the film, the Phogat sisters have become celebrity wrestlers. In July this year, South Korea’s first lady Kim Jung-sook, a self-confessed movie fan, invited the family to meet her during the Korean President Moon Jae-in’s visit to India. Kim had watched the movie with the Indian students in Seoul.
China will be hosting the championships and the association has reportedly put in a request with the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to that effect.
