Barcelona shelves plan for club crest update amid opposition from members

Facing opposition from club members, Spanish football giants Barcelona are reportedly dropping the plan to change the club crest which was last updated in 2002.
Barcelona announced the change to the design of their club badge last month saying that“the context, the society and the technology have changed enormously, and the identifying signs should evolve too.”
The modernized club crest of the LaLiga champions removed the letters ‘FCB’ while adding more subtle changes to the emblem’s colours and was supposed to come into being from next season. Among the biggest change is the ball size that is now bigger than the previous one. The acronym represents the Catalan name – Futbol Club Barcelona.
However, the club supporters’ are concerned with the removal of the ‘FCB’ acronym, which members argued is a symbol of the club’s Catalonian origin. The letters were altered to ‘CFB’ when former Spanish general Francisco Franco came to power in Spain with the club forced to use the Spanish version of their name.
Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu, who earlier made it clear that the lettering will appear in any future update to the badge, has now announced that the plans have been suspend for a period of ‘internal reflection’ over the proposals.
The club, which has been working for months on modernising brand strategy, presented the new design as being “an evolution faithful to the historic elements, the city, Barcelona, the country, Catalonia, the club, the colours blue and red, and the ball.”
The plans to change the club’s crest was also discussed, with regards to the description and identification of its colours, last month during a meeting of the club’s board of directors at an ordinary session in the Camp Nou offices.
Barcelona last updated their crest in 2002, and have undergone several changes during their 119-year history.
