Indonesia submits formal interest to host 2032 Olympics

formal interest to host 2032 Olympics

Indonesia, following the success of the Jakarta and Palembang Asian Games earlier this year, has made a formal expression of interest to host the 2032 Olympic Games.
The move has been revealed by International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach. Speaking on a panel on the eve of the Youth Olympic Games 2018 in Buenos Aires, the ICO chief said: “The candidature has just been confirmed by a letter from the president of Indonesia and by the President of the (Indonesian) national Olympic committee.”
Invigorated by the success of the recently concluded Asian Games 2018 in the cities of Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia has submitted the letter of interest to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), confirming that it will bid for 2032 Olympics.
The 2032 Olympics are the next available summer games after IOC has awarded the 2024 and 2028 editions of the multi-sport quadrennial event to Paris and Los Angeles respectively. Japan will host the 32nd Olympiad in Tokyo in 2020.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo was the first to reveal the plans to host the world’s biggest multi-sport spectacle. “With the experience we have in running the Asian Games, we are sure we can host an even bigger event,” Widodo said in a statement on the eve of Asian Games 2018 closing ceremony.
“Therefore, Indonesia plans to immediately submit itself as a candidate to host the Olympics in 2032.”
Indonesian bid, however, may face a challenge within Asia as South Korea is considering a united bid with to hosts the 35th edition of the Olympic Games jointly with North Korea.
Should Indonesia get the opportunity to host the Summer Olympics, it would become the fourth Asian country to do so, after Japan, China and South Korea.
On the same panel, Argentine President Mauricio Macri hinted that Argentina might also consider a bid for the Summer Games and indicated that the experience of hosting the Youth Olympics would stand the country in good stead.
“Obviously once this wonderful event is finished we will have the chance to start thinking about trying to organize an Olympic Games bid,” he said.
Other cities considering bids for the 2032 Games include Shanghai and Queensland, while India, Germany, Russia and Egypt have expressed a general interest to stage the Games. The IOC will elect the 2032 host city in 2025.
