Kapil among 3 fined for allowing images to promote club that cheated people

Kapil Dev is among three celebrities who have been asked by a Vadodara court to pay ₹ 8.1 lakh to the victims of a fraud. They are penalised for allowing their images to promote a club, which later turned out to be a fraudulent venture.
The Vadodara District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has ordered Kapil Dev, film star Govinda and Ravi Kishan to pay ₹8.1 lakh. The trio had permitted a couple Raman Kapoor and his wife Seema Kapoor to use their pictures as celebrity promoters in advertisement campaigns to promote Sunstar Club. The couple has reportedly duped people of lakhs of rupees in the name of club membership, which assured the members of various benefits.
The club later turned out to be a fraud.
Eighteen people had filed a petition in the Vadodara District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum in 2017 against Sunstar promoters Raman Kapoor, his wife Seema Kapoor and the three celebrities, states a Times of India report.
The complainants had alleged that they have paid from ₹1.2 lakh to ₹ 3 lakh membership fee in 2016. The membership assured them of numerous benefits including free stay at the club house. However, as they called the club a year later to avail the benefits promised to them they did not get any response from the company.
Realising they have been cheated, the “members” filed police cases against the couple in Ahmedabad and Vadodara.
Several other victims had also approached the Forum through a consumer association Jagrut Nagrik. The complainants had also accused the celebrities of adopting  unfair trade practices.
The Vadodara District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum upheld the arguments. Finding the celebrities responsible for “unfair trade practices”, it has ruled that they will also pay each of the complainants ₹15,000.
