Sony Network in FY2017-18: Rajesh Kaul

More than 500 million people have watched football content on Sony Pictures Network sports channels in the last financial year. Inspired by the numbers, Sony Sports Cluster has charted out plans to broadcast over 800 games, more than 1,200 hours of content every year.
“We have seen very strong growth in both viewership and reach of football over the last year. And, after the recent success of the FIFA World Cup, we are very sure of the football story. So be it national team or club football, we have acquired and retained rights to the best properties in the world,” Sony Pictures Network sports business head Rajesh Kaul has told business news daily Economic Times.
Inspired by the strong audience response, Sony is targeting to drive its growth with live European and global football content. Sony Sports Cluster has plans to broadcast over 800 football games per year. The network will have more than 1,200 hours of live football content, Kaul has told ET.
With the latest La Liga and Euro football acquisitions, Sony Pictures Netwrok now has in its kitty eight precious European football properties – UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, LaLiga, Serie A, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Nations League and UEFA EURO 2020.
Football will still have to go a long in India to match the high commercial values and potential of cricket. However, considering the fact that football media rights values and business  come nowhere near in comparison to cricket, the European football content showcasing the best of international star players is the best value for money deal for sports broadcasters in India.
