Sports Ministry sanctions ₹6.62 lakh for Sushil’s training in Georgia
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has sanctioned a ₹6.62 to the double Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar.
The amount, sanctioned to fund Sushil Kumar’s training in Georgia, is meant for payment to his two sparring partners and the physiotherapist. Last month Sushil Kumar was included in the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) for the first time in two years.
The Ministry has also sanctioned ₹ 3.22 lakh for two other wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sumit for their training and participation in a tournament in Turkey.
Among other sports, gymnastics has received a total grant of ₹21.76 lakh, including ₹7.76 lakh for the month-long training program of Pranati Nayak in Uzbekistan. Another ₹14 lakh is sanctioned for the 32-day program for Ashish Kumar and Aruna Budda Reddy. This will also include a training camp in Belgium.
Davis Cupper Ramkumar Ramanathan will get ₹12.57 lakh for his training (under coach Angel Gimenez Alonso), competition and equipment expenses leading up to the Asian Games.
A total of ₹11.48 lakh has been budgeted for the purchase of archery equipment for three compound archers Trisha Deb, Rajat Chauhan, Jyothi Surekha Vennam and a recurve archer Promila Daimary.
Further, ₹4.04 lakh has been sanctioned for the engagement of Italian coach Sergio Pagni to train India’s compound archers for a period of 10 days at the SAI Sonepat centre ahead of the Asian Games. The four compound archers who will be trained are Abhishek Verma, Rajat Chauhan, Trisha Deb and Jyothi Surekha Vennam.
Judokas Avtar Singh and Vijay Kumar Yadav will get ₹3.55 lakh for their training, competition (to be accompanied by coach Yashpal Solanki) and equipment expenses ahead of the Asian Games. The committee also decided to exclude Tulika Mann from the TOPS scheme due to her recent below-par performances.
Meanwhile, the Mission Olympic Cell of the Sports Ministry has also approved a monthly allowance of ₹50,000 for each of the 18 members of the men’s hockey team under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme, reports national news agency PTI.
The decision to include hockey was taken after India has put on an improved performance under new coach Harendra Singh and finished runner-up in the Champions Trophy in the Netherlands.
The women’s team may also be included in the TOPS after reviewing their performance in the upcoming World Cup and the Asian Games thereafer.
Boxer Sarajubala Devi got an extension under TOPS scheme after qualifying for the Asian Games.
