Conor McGregor’s UFC comeback fight at UFC 229 was sold out in a mere three minutes from the tickets for the October 6 went on sale.
In what would be described as McGregor effect, tickets for Irish MMA star Conor McGregor’s comeback fight in UFC sold out within three minutes of going on sale online. The 30-year-old Irishman’s UFC lightweight title fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 onOctober 6 has also recorded the second-largest gate in the UFC history.
McGregor aka ‘The Notorious’ was out of action since his boxing match against Floyd Mayweather in August last year and it has been nearly two years since his last MMA outing in UFC that resulted in stripping off his Lightweight Championship title after UFC 223 on April 7 due to inactivity.
According to the reports, tickets with price range from $205 to $2,505 for McGregor’s fight with the Russian counterpart at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas were sold in just three minutes with only a few hundred tickets, all in the most expensive sections, were available.
The pay-per-view event has already surpassed UFC 200, which generated what was then a Nevada MMA gate record of US$10.7 million. The promotion’s highest gate in the history of US$17.7 million was recorded at UFC 205, which McGregor also headlined in 2016 at Madison Square Garden against Eddie Alvarez.
UFC has been heavily criticised for not taking a tough stand on McGregor’s misconducts and legal issues and instead welcoming him back as it is desperately in need to boost up its falling TV ratings. In July he pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct for an incident at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
The fight becomes more important and a must-attend for the MMA and McGregor fans as the Irishman, according to MMA analyst Robin Black, will retire if he loses to Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Black, a retired MMA fighter with a 4-5 record, has reportedly said, “as much as there is so much for each one to gain, there is also a lot for each one to lose. If McGregor loses, in my opinion, he will retire. If McGregor loses this fight, he will retire.”
