Retired German football captain Philipp Lahm will lead the UEFA Euro 2024 organising committee if his nation wins the bid to host 17th edition of men’s multi-nation quadrennial football tournament in Europe.
The 34-year-old, who led Germany to win the 2014 FIFA World Cup before retiring from international football, is currently an ambassador for the nation’s bid to host Euro 2024.
Germany is competing with Turkey for the right to host the UEFA Euro 2024 in the Capital city of Istanbul. The governing body of football in Europe will announce the winning bid on September 27.
Lahm, as the chief of UEFA Euro 2024 organising committee, will ensure the systematic setup of the ‘local organising structure,’ states the official release from German Football Association (DFB).
Lahm said, “It was my desire since the beginning of my work as an ambassador for Euro 2024 to assume the responsibility in the long term. As a national player and most recently in my role as EURO ambassador, I have always admired DFB’s professionalism. This is why I am delighted to be part of this team and will do my best to bring the EURO 2024 to Germany.”
Reinhard Grindel, president of the DFB, said, “The decision to bind Philipp Lahm to the association on a long-term basis has been taken in close coordination and with the broad approval of the DFB Presidency and representatives from the Bundesliga. As ambassador Philipp Lahm has so far had an excellent and committed job and I am convinced that this will be the case beyond the 27th of September.”
DFB General Secretary dr. Friedrich Curtius, added, “I am personally very pleased that we were able to fix such an important and long-term prepared personnel decision amicably and above all confidentially. Philipp Lahm has great sporting experience which he will bring forward in this responsible position for the preparation of the EURO 2024. “
