Premier League right on top among ‘Big 5’ for highest paid managers

Premier League right

Premier League is right on top among ‘Big 5’ professional football leagues in the world for the highest paid managers.
Premier League clubs spent £1.2 billion ($1.53 billion) buying players for rather unusual positions as the top two most expensive players weren’t attackers in contrast with 2017. Even as the transfer window for the other ‘Big 5’ European football leagues (LaLiga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and Bundesliga) remains open, the top division of English football has emerged as a clear winner this season, not just for player signings, but also for record salaries paid to the managers.
When the highest paid football managers in each of the Big 5 leagues are considered, Premier League’s Manchester United squad leader Jose Mourinho tops the bill for his $31.2 annual salary after tax. The battle-hardened Portuegese who moved from Chelsea in 2016 has led the Blues team to three Premier League titles and one FA Cup title. His managerial career also includes stint with other top clubs including Porto, Real Madrid, Inter Milan etc.
Next in the list is LaLiga manager Diego Simeone for his $26.4 million contract with Atletico Madrid. The club, under the 48-year-old Argentine, has won one LaLiga, UEFA Super Cup and Copa del Ray title each, and two Europa League title. The third in the list is Bayern Munich (Bundesliga) manager Carlo Ancelotti ($20.4). Massimiliano Allegri ($15.6mn) of Juventus (Serie A) and Leonardo Jardim ($13.2 mn) of AS Monaco (Ligue 1) are at the fourth and fifth spot respectively.
When it comes to Big 5 league managers who have won the Big 5 title before, Premier League again rules the roster with a total of seven managers including Jurgen klopp, Jose Mourinho, Pep Gaurdiola, Unai Emery, Manuel Pellegrini, Rafa Benitez and Claude Puel. Ligue 1, Serie A and LaLiga follows next with two managers whereas Bundesliga has zero.
Premier League also holds the distinction for employing maximum number of foreigners as managers. As many as 16 of the 20 managers in the top-flight English league are foreigners. Ligue 1, Bundesliga and LaLiga have 5 managers who are foreigners and Serie A has just one.
Premier League 2018-19 season began on a high note with a record-breaking transfer deal involving Kepa Arrizabalaga move from Athletic Bilbao to Chelsea. The record $91 million deal makes him the most expensive goalkeeper ever.
In a first, Premier League’s first-ever shortened transfer window saw the world record fee for a goalkeeper broken twice in a span of just three weeks! The first record was set by Brazilian Alisson Becker’s move from AS Roma to Liverpool in a deal worth $85 million.
