The Asian Games 2018 mark the return of the continental multi-discipline, multi-national event to Indonesia for a second time after Jakarta had played host to the 1962 edition. From across Asia, 45 nations will be competing in 58 sporting disciplines from August 18 to September 2 in the event that will an approximate $3.2 billion.
Jakarta and Palembang are though named as the cities to play hosts to various sporting competitions, some other cities in West Jawa too will be the venues for several games.
Believe it or not, the oldest athlete to participate in the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang is 70 years elder than the youngest participants. Incidentally, both come from Malaysia. Here are some interesting and “do you know it” facts from the 18th Asian Games:
  • Malaysian bridge player 81-year-old Lee Hung Fong will become the oldest debutant at the Asian Game ever.
  • The youngest athlete at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang is 11-year-old skateboarder Ian Nurmen Amri
  • The 18th Asian Games have association with 77 brands in six different categories
  • $3.2 billion is estimated to be the total cost of the Jakarta and Palembang Asian Games
  • The Asian Games village in Jakarta is spread over 10 hectares. Ten towers, with 7,424 apartments, can accommodate over 22,272 atheletes – almost 60% more than the Olympic standards.
  • Indonesia got the right to host the games by default as original hosts Hanoi, Vietnam, withdrew the application to host the games. Surabaya was Indonesia’s first choice to host the Games. However the decision was changed as Surabaya was selected for the 2021 Asian Youth Games.
  • Jakarta and Palembang, though, are named the host cities for the 2018 Asian Games, some disciplines will also be played at several West Jawa cities like the capital Bandung, Bogor, Bekasi, Cikarang, Subang and Depok.
  • This will be the first occasion ever that the Asian Games will take place in more than one city.
  • Jakarta’s suburbs will play host to seven sports, including canoeing, mountain biking, road cycling, men’s football, modern pentathlon and paragliding.
  • Men’s football action will be held across the Pakansari Stadium in Cibinong, the Stadion Wibawa Mukti in Cikarang, the Patriot Chandrabhaga Stadium in Bekasi and the Jalak Harupat Soreang Stadium in Bandung.
