UEFA hails blockchain-powered ticket distribution system at Super Cup finals

UEFA, the governing body of football in Europe, has announced the successful trial of a blockchain-enabled mobile ticketing system at the UEFA Super Cup 2018 finals between Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid.
The technology provides for simple yet safe ticket sales process by employing a blockchain-powered system aimed at providing secure ticket distribution and preventing the replication and duplication of tickets.
UEFA has distributed 100% of the match tickets of the Super Cup 2018 finals, that saw Atletico win 4-2 against the city and LaLiga rivals Real at Tallinn, through the blockchain-based dedicated iOS and Android app combined with mobile Bluetooth devices at the stadium entrances.
The system was first used for 50% of the tickets distributed to the general public for the 2018 UEFA Europa League final between Atlético and Marseille in Lyon. Since then, it underwent fine-tuning and improvements in several other test events.
Following the successful implementation of the new system for the Lyon final, UEFA was able to increase the distribution system to all of the general public acquiring tickets for this year’s UEFA Super Cup final, UEFA has stated in its official release.
UEFA further said that it will continue to develop the system further, with the aim of using it at future events.
