Despite IPL success Star Sports restricts Asia Cup broadcast to only 3 languages

IPL success Star Sports

Star Sports’s will broadcast the Asia Cup 2018 next month in only three languages English, Hindi, and Tamil in spite of the grand success of its multi-language, multiple screen experiment for the Indian Premier League earlier this year.
Star Sports has decided to keep the Asia Cup broadcast only on its Sports Channels and not disturb the Fix Point Chart (FPC) of the other genre screens for the two-week, six-nation tournament.
Elucidating the reasons for restricting the broadcast to three languages, Thakar said that the Asia Cup is of short duration and since Star does not have other regional language sports channels the move to have more regional feeds does not make sense. An in and out situation for a regional sports feed will not work, he added.
Star Sports CEO Gautam Thakar at the launch of the Asia Cup campaign in Mumbai has revealed that India’s leading sports broadcaster will telecast the Asia Cup tournament in three languages – English, Hindi and Tamil – only on the dedicated sports network channels. Star’s initiative for the Bangla and Kannada sports channels is awaiting approvals from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
The Asia Cup between September 15 and 28 will feature the regional cricket powers – India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and the winner of Asia Cup 2018 qualifiers.
Star Sports will broadcast all the 13 one-day internationals live on Star Sports 1, Star Sports 1 HD, Star Sports 1 Hindi, Star Sports 1 Hindi HD, Star Sports Select, Star Sports Select HD, Star Sports 2,  Star Sports 2 HD and Star Sports Tamil. Star Sports-owned OTT platform Hotstar will live stream the games.
Star Sports had broadcast the Indian Premier League initial games in 6 languages – Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Bangla – on ten channels. The final on May 27 was broadcast on 17 channels with the live feed in eight different languages. Star Sports 1 English, Star Sports 1 HD English, Star Sports 1 Hindi, Star Sports 1 HD Hindi, Star Sports 1 Tamil, Star Sports 1 Select SD English, Star Sports 1 Select HD English, Star Plus SD, Star Plus HD, Star Pravah SD, Star Pravah HD, Star Gold SD, Star Gold HD, Star Suvarna Plus, Star Maa Movies, Star Jalsha Movies and Asianet Movies had created a record for a sports event’s live broadcast across 17 screens.
The matches will be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium and the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. The Dubai Stadium will host the tournament opener on September 15 and the Final on September 28.
India meet arch rivals Pakistan on September 19 in what may simply be termed as the mother of all cricketing battles.
