Nike’s brand endorsement deal with controversial athlete Colin Kaepernick is invoking mixed response for the brand. On the positive side hand there has been marketing value gains worth $43 million and a 31% boost in sales. On the other side there are protests boycotts and bans.
The Parks and Recreation Department at Kenner city in the Louisiana State has banned Nike equipment in the wake of the brand’s ad campaign with the controversial athlete Kaepernick.
“Under no circumstances any Nike product or a product with the Nike logo be purchased for use or delivery at any City of Kenner Recreation Facility,” read a notice from the office of the City of Kenner Mayor, E Ben Zahn Ill. The notice is issued a day after the Nike-Kaepernick deal has sparked the controversy.
The Mayor in the memo, released by his office, has strictly warned that none of the city’s $125,000 leisure supplies budget be spent on Nike products. “Effective immediately all purchases made by any booster club operating at any Kenner Recreation Facility for wearing apparel, shoes, athletic equipment and/or any athletic product must be approved by the Director of Parks and Recreation, or his assignee,” read the memo addressed to the Director, Parks and Recreation Department.
The Memo has reportedly not been welcomed by some quarters in the Keller City. According to media reports, City councilman, Gregory Carroll, has described Zahn’s memo as “disturbing”.
“I was not made aware of this decision beforehand and it is in direct contradiction of what I stand for and what the City of Kenner should stand for. I am 100% against this decision,” Carroll has said in a social media statement.
However, the deal has invoked criticism from US president Donald Trump, while ace athletes Tiger Woods and Serena Williams were among thousands of people who stood by Nike and Kaepernick.
