Paris 2018 - 10th Gay Games

Paris is hosting the 10th Gay Games from today (Saturday), six years ahead of the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics. The Paris 2018 gay Games have also invoked tremendous sponsors interest with over 50 brands on-board as the partners of the quadrennial global Gay Games.
Six years ahead of Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the French capital is hosting the tenth edition of Gay Games – Paris 2018 – which got underway today (Saturday) and will go through until August 12.
Gay Games is a global multi-sport and cultural event aimed at promoting acceptance of sexual diversity, featuring lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) athletes and artists. The Games every four years are organised under the banner of The Federation of Gay Games (FGG), the international governing and sanctioning body of the quadrennial event.
The 10th Gay Games will see the participation of over 10,000 athletes from 70+ countries in 38 disciplines. The inaugural edition of the games in San Francisco 1982 saw the participation of 1,350 athletes.
The Games have been promoted as “a hymn to love”, advocating a society “for all diversities”, and with the motto: “All Equal”.
The venues for the games include the Jean Bouin and Charléty stadiums, the Grand Palais, the Carreau du Temple and the Salle Pleyel.
France’s Sports Minister Laura Flessel commented ahead of the Games:”From the start of this project, I chose to make a commitment beside the team of Paris 2018 – as a professional athlete, as a sports enthusiast but also as a woman and as a citizen.
“This is why I invite you right now to join us: the Gay Games are a big party in which each can participate.”
On July 31, Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet signed a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) engagement charter on behalf of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the French capital.
The charter, created in 2012 by French equal rights group Autre Cercle, commits Paris 2024 to best practice in the fight against gender and sexual orientation discrimination.
New sports of boxing, pétanque, roller derby and wheelchair rugby – all approved by the Federation of Gay Games, were included in the bids of the three finalist bidding organisations from Liimerick in Ireland, London and Paris.
Gay Games have attracted a tremendous interest from sponsors. The Paris 2018 Gay Games have over 50 sponsors in different categories that include multinational corporates such as General Electric (GE), BNP Paribas, Groupe Renault, Microsoft, Air France etc. among few others.
