FIFA, the world governing body of football, is reportedly planning a proposal to introduce a standardised transfer window to ensure more transparency in the globalised football transfer market and a level playing field for clubs across Europe.
According to British national daily The Times, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has been presented with proposals from an internal task force that would see the transfer window close the day before the start of the season in each member country.
The report further states that FIFA has opted against introducing a uniform window across Europe as the starting dates of domestic leagues vary around the world.
Premier League have shut the transfer window for their clubs ahead of the season opener yesterday that saw Manchester United win 2-0 against Huddersfield.
However, the window remains open for Italian Serie A clubs until next week, while Spanish LaLiga, French Ligue 1 and German Bundesliga clubs have until the end of the month to sign players.
Premier League last year became the first major European football league to revamp rules, following Football Association’s (FA) decision, to ensure that the club’s wind up their transfer business before the start of the new season, 2018-19 will be the first season under the new system.
Deloitte has revealed that the shortened transfer window saw Premier League clubs spend $1.5 billion on players this summer, which represents a decrease from the $1.83 bn spent last summer. It marks the first time in eight years that Premier League transfer business has fallen.
Clubs spent around $140.5 million on the deadline of the English transfer window a day before yesterday, compared to the record-breaking $268.15 million spent on August 31, 2017. Kepa Arrizabalaga (pictured) became the world’s most expensive goalkeeper after a move from Athletic Bilbao to Chelsea for a deal reportedly worth $91 million (£71m).
