15 Gold, 68 medals: The Best ever Asian Games for India

15 Gold, 68 medals: The Best ever Asian Games for India

India has capped the best ever Asian Games with a haul of 68 medals, including 15 gold, at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang.
With two gold medals on the last day of the ongoing Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta and Palembang –  one for young boxer Amit Panghal in the Men’s Light Fly (49kg) and one by the men’s pair of Pranab Bardhan and Shibhnath Sarkar in Bridge – India has written yet another golden lettered chapter in its sports heritage. There are miles to go, but the progress on the way is giving a lot of hope.
India’s overall medal tally has reached 68 (15 Gold, 24 Silver and 29 Bronze) at the 18th edition of the Asian Games, creating a record medal overhaul in the history of the Asian quadrennial multi-sport event which had started at the National Stadium in New Delhi in 1951.
Also, this edition marks the highest number of silver medals ever won by India at the Asian Games and has equalled the record highest number of gold medals (15) achieved at the inaugural edition in 1951 in New Delhi.
India broke the record medal haul that time during the 2010 Asian Games in the Chinese city of Guangzhou when it brought home 14 gold, 17 silver and 34 bronze medals. The third highest number of medals (57) were clinched during the last edition at Incheon and the 1982 edition when the games were held for the second time in the Indian capital.
India pocketed their latest medal at the Jakarta and Palembang Games with the women’s squash team silver by Joshana Chinnapa, Dipika Pallikal, Sunayna Kuruvilla and Tanvi Khanna.
India also has a chance of a bronze in hockey as the men’s team will take on Pakistan later today (Saturday) evening, after a shocking defeat at the hands of Malaysia in the semi-finals during the penalty shootouts.
