The Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators have announced a lucrative hike in the pay of the national selection committee members. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India are crying foul about the manner and timing of the fee rise.
The CoA, spearheaded by Vinod Rai, has announced a raise of ₹30 lakh in the annual salary of the senior national selection committee members. The Chairman of the senior national selection committee gets a pay raise of ₹ 20 lakh per annum. This raises the national selectors annual pay package to ₹ 90 lakh per annum, whereas the chairman will now be entitled to ₹ 1 crore annually.
The salaries of the junior national selectors, too, are revised ₹60 lakh for the committee members and ₹65 lakh to the committee chairman. Women’s national team selection committee members will now get ₹25 lakh and the chairman ₹30 lakh.
The BCCI office-bearer are, however, not at all happy about this “arbitrary” revision of the salaries. “This is not appropriate for the CoA to act in a haste when their term in the office is going to be over. There is no rationale in these hikes. BCCI is not just about the national team, national players and national committees. The domestic structure also needs similar considerations. These matters will be reconsidered once the ‘order is restored, in the board,” a BCCI senior member told insidesport.co on condition of anonymity. “We had discussed this matter, but our recommendations are ignored (by the CoA).
“Reconsideration does not mean a cut in these salary hikes. Every constituent of the BCCI is a stakeholder in the BCCI revenues. Domestic players and States cannot be ignored. There needs to be a parity in the fee structure,” the official said. “Any decision taken by a “two-member committee” who is not even fully familiar with the complete cricket structure in India cannot make arbitrary decisions. Such decisions need a revisit. The right decisions will be respected and wherever needed the changes will be forced in a democratic manner.”
The CoA, states a Times of India report, was “informed that before the increase could be communicated to the selectors, some of them had approached the BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary, seeking an increase in their remuneration.
“In view thereof, the acting secretary had Asked Saba Karim (general manager cricket operations at BCCI) for a comparative analysis of the increase in remuneration fee of Team India’s support staff and (India A coach) Rahul Dravid since Financial Year 2014-15. After going through the same the acting secretary had recommended an increase of approximately 70%.”
The CoA had, however, not taken the secretary’s recommendation into consideration to decide the final salary hike.
