Google has dedicated its doodles today (Saturday) to celebrate the start of the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Games which take off with the opening ceremony today will run till October 18.
The doodle features an animated young bird compete in various sporting events like weightlifting, gymnastics and swimming.
The Youth Olympics Games feature athletes between 15 and 18 years of age. The global competition of future sports stars will be contested among the leading upcoming talent from over 200 countries.
India’s 47-athlete contingent at the Youth Olympic Games includes ISSF senior and junior World Cup champion Manu Bhaker, Commonwealth Games medallist shooter Mehuli Ghosh, world youth boxing champion Jyoti Gulia and world youth weightlifting silver medallist Jeremy Lalrinunga.
The Youth Olympic Games are described by the International Olympic Committee as “an elite sporting event for young people from all over the world”. Kiteboarding, BMX freestyle park and a new version of handball that’s played on the beach are making their Youth Olympics debut this year, while futsal is replacing its parent format football.
It is the first time Summer Youth Olympic Games are being held outside of Asia and the first Youth Games for either summer or winter to be held outside Eurasia. The previous two summer events have been held in Singapore (2010) and Nanjing, China (2014).
Argentine native Jaguar – Pandi – is the mascot of the games.
