Spanish broadcast and multimedia group Mediapro is reportedly set to launch an esports over-the-top (OTT) streaming service for Spanish speaking community by the end of 2018.
The move marks the traditional broadcaster’s strongly growing interest in esports content after its first foray into the sports industry two years ago.
The new platform, which will be similar to Amazon-owned Twitch, is expected to go live before the end of this year. The channel will house live competitive gaming events and tournaments, along with a host of exclusive in-house content.
According to Spanish media reports, Mediapro will initially make the OTT service available for free with an aim of creating a community of five million users within five years.
The company currently holds the international TV rights to La Liga, Spanish top division football league. The media group also has the rights in Spain to the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, while it will also take on coverage of Ligue 1, the top tier of soccer in France, from the 2020/21 season.

Mediapro made a move into esports two years ago when it purchased the Professional Video Games League (LVP), which operates in Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Peru and the UK. The company’s latest move would suggest that it is now aiming to become a leader in the distribution of esports content as well as in the organisation of competitive gaming tournaments.
