Festival of India at Goa to have sports films section

The International Film Festival of India, at its 49th edition in Goa this year, will also have a section dedicated to sports films. The section will reportedly be introduced under the Khelo India campaign.
“This (sports films) section will highlight how sports is being used as an important theme for storytelling in cinema. It also reflects the emphasis on a narrative that appeals to the current generation. Besides, this section offers an opportunity for cinema lovers to have a glimpse of the lives of our sporting heroes,” Delhi Times has quoted Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Minister of State, I&B Ministry, as saying.
Rathore also he confirmed that the sports films’ section has been added to this year’s IFFI on the request of the Government of Goa.
The 2004 Athens Games medallist shooter, Rathore also holds Sports Portfolio as a Minister of State in the Narendra Modi cabinet.
“I want cine-goers to enjoy the best sports films. From Dangal and Sultan to MS Dhoni: The Untold Story and Gold, a number of sports films have released in Bollywood in the last couple of years. So which movies would make the cut?” Rathore adds. “It is work in progress at the moment. It will be an opportunity for movie buffs to get a glimpse into the lives of their sporting heroes.”
Film like Dangal, Chak de, Bhag Milkha Bhag, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, Gold and Soorma have been among top grossers in Indian cinema. Sports of late has become a choicest genre for film makers in the country. While the biopics on Dhoni, Phogat sisters, hockey star Sandeep have been an instant hit, films on the life and journey of the likes of Saina Nehwa, PV Sindhu, P Gopichand have already caught the imagination of many producers and directors.
The 49th International Film Festival in India has been scheduled from November 20 to 28.
