The FIFA World Cup is long over. There was a long, transitional gap between the limited overs cricket and the Test series between Indian and England. The lack of significant content has resulted in a major crash of Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) ratings for sports genre programmes on Indian television.
Sony Ten 3, Sony Six and DD Sports, the respective No. 1, 2 and three sports channels in the previous week, are nowhere in the table of top 5 channels for Week 3 (July 21-July 27) have been the major losers. The channels with (Sony Ten 3 – 229,402,000 impressions, Sony Six – 130,724,000 impressions and DD Sports – 119,004 impressions) have crashed below 40,000 impressions in whisker – up to over 600% decline.
Sony Ten 1 and Star Sports First, for their dedicated viewers for the WWE and cricket repeat broadcast respectively, have sustained their average audience ratings to be the first and second channels for the week respectively.
The top-five sports genre show table will conclusively establish the fact that any repeat cricket action or programming is the most watched sports content after live cricket on Indian channel. When there was no significant live content on the Indian sports channels, four repeat cricket telecasts on Star Sports First have been among the top five sports genre shows for the week. The other show, in the No. 4 position, is the live telecast of the WWE RAW 2018.
Sony Ten 3 and Sony Six are bound to bounce back strongly with the broadcast data for the first two days of the ongoing Edgbaston Test and Star Sports having not major live content to bank on. The India-England series is also accepted well by sponsors.
