New York City FC excluded from Manchester City-Puma reported kit deal

Manchester City-Puma reported kit deal

Premier League champions Manchester City’s reported new kit sponsorship deal with German sportswear giant Puma will cover all clubs of its parent company City Football Group’s (CFG) global football clubs business portfolio with the exception of New York City.
According to the reports that emerged in November last year, the English club have signed Puma as their official kit sponsor in a deal worth £50 million ($64.8 mn) per year from the 2019/20 season.
The deal, for which an official announcement is still awaited, is touted to be the most lucrative commercial deal in the club’s history and would be the third biggest deal in the Premier League behind Manchester United and Chelsea.
Spanish sports daily Mundo Deportivo has now revealed that the partnership incorporates all clubs owned by CFG, including La Liga outfit Girona FC, Australian A-League club Melbourne City, Japan’s Yokohama F Marinos that plays in top division J1 league and Uruguayan Primera División club CA Torque.
However, the deal will not have New York City FC under its purview due to Major League Soccer’s (MLS) league-wide contract with Adidas, which prevents clubs from signing their own kit supplier.
Manchester City’s deal with Puma would see the brand replace American sportswear giant Nike which had signed a six-year kit deal with the club in 2013 worth £72 million ($109 million) in total. The partnership came to an end with the City’s triumphant 2017-18 season.
