The Indian cricket team has no time for the “King of Good Times”, who in his good times would call shots no just in Indian cricket, but in Indian sports. Fugitive Indian liquor baron Vijay Mallya wanted to meet the Indian cricket team in England. The team management turned down the request.
Mallya once influenced the game as one of the major sponsors of cricket in India. The man whose brand “united the player divided by (the IPL) teams” in the ooh… laa..laaa.. la.. le… ooo…. commercial has close ties with cricketers. He has been the owner of Virat Kohli’s Indian Premier League abode for all the 11 seasons – Royal Challengers Bangalore – and enjoyed close ties with the Team India skipper. It was Mallya and his IPL team that had handpicked Kohli for the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League. Today, Kohli has among his numerous achievements, the unique feat of never ever going to the IPL auction table for his 11 years with the Royal Challengers, Bangalore.
Known for partying hard, Mallya would have the celebrities at his door steps at a phone call during his days as the “King of Good Times”. Today, the man is virtually persona non grata for the Indian cricket team. Mallya reportedly had sought a meeting with Kohli and the Indian cricket team in England. The team management declined the request to avoid any controversy.
The Indian cricket team had also left early from a charity event organised by Kohli’s federation last year to avoid Mallya who was there.
The 62-year-old former business tycoon is evading Indian authorities and facing an extradition suit in London for bank loan defaults syphoning off funds.
Mallya-owned Formula 1 team Force India is also having troubled times as a London court on Friday las had appointed an administrator on it.
