The Supreme Court of India today (Thursday) approved the revised draft constitution of the Board of Control for Cricket in India with a direction to the State Association and the affiliated bodies to implement the new constitution in four weeks.
The Supreme Court has given some relief to the board members, but advised the Vinod Rai-led two-member Committee of Administrators to continue in the office to supervise and report the implementation of the draft constitution by the States.
The 35-page order struck off the one State, one vote policy recommended by the Justice Lodha Panel while giving recognition to Maharashtra Cricket Association, Mumbai Cricket Association and Vidarbha Cricket Association from Maharashtra as well as the Gujarat Cricket Association, Saurashtra Cricket Association and the Baroda Cricket Association from Gujarat.
The apex court has also given the officials major relief over the “cooling off period”. As against the Lodha Panel advisory of a three-year cooling off period after each three-year term in a State body or the BCCI office, now the office-bearers can have two successive two-year terms in the BCCI and/or the State bodies.
However, the court has agreed with the Lodha committee suggestions that a person will be disqualified from being a BCCI or a State body office-bearer on attaining the age of 70 years.
