German football player Mesut Ozil has announced the launch of his own esports team specializing in FIFA 19 – the latest edition of the popular football video game series by EA Sports.
The 29-year-old Arsenal star, who quit the German national team after the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia, is partnering eSportsReputation, a Berlin-based players management and esports agency, to launch the new FIFA esports franchisee.
The ‘Team Ozil’ will take part in both national and international Fifa esports tournaments. He confirmed the deal, writing on Twitter: “How cheeky is that: I’m teaming up with @eSports_Rep to form my own @EASPORTSFIFA team.
“In the upcoming weeks we’ll look out for players around the world who will represent #teamozil in all major national and international EA FIFA competitions.”

Ozil’s move comes after he was announced as a brand ambassador for the Fifa eWorld Cup in June. The top football esports event, FIFA eWorld Cup 2018, which went underway on August 1 is set to conclude today (Saturday) with a grand finale at The O2, London. The winner of the competition will receive $250,000 while the runner-up will return home richer by $ 50,000.
FIFA 19 is slated to be launched on September 28, and it will be available on Xbox, PlayStation and PC, Nintendo Switch and on mobile.
Ozil, last month, announced that he will not play for Germany anymore after recent racial attacks on him, criticising his lacklustre performance during the recently concluded World Cup in Russia.
Ozil, for his Turkish origin, had been under fire since posing for a controversial photograph with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in May which sparked questions about his loyalty to the German squad ahead of the tournament in Russia.
