The Delhi High Court has raised serious questions on the selection of the Indian kabaddi team for the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia. The Court in a landmark judgement has order the “selection trials” on September 15 to ascertain the ability of the players, who will be representing the country and the Asian Games 2018 in Indonesia.
The Court has passed the order on the petition of C Honnappa Gowda and Rajanathnam, both Arjuna Awardees, who had filed a petition in the Supreme Court of India. The Apex Court had referred the matter to the Delhi High Court, which was also adjudicating on a petition against the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India.

The petitioners have challenged the selection process followed to select the Indian team for the Asian Games 2018 by the AKFI. They had claimed that the slection process was “an eyewash”.
The Delhi High Court, considering the fact that teams have been selected, the organisers of the Games have been informed about the team members and the time was too short to conduct another selection trials and change the squad, has ruled to allow the same team to go for the Asian Games in Indonesia.
However, in landmark order the court had ordered to conduct “trials of the players from all over the country and make them play against the team going to the Asian Games to represent India. The trials will be conducted after the team returns from the Asian Games.
The Court has appointed the Committee, headed by the District Judge (Retd) Ms Ravinder Kaur, to supervise the trials. The committee will also have nominees of the Government of India and the Sports Authority of India and the Indian Olympic Association.
The Court also asked both the petitioners to be present in the trial to give necessary suggestions. The trials will be video recorded. The will be listed next for screening of the video coverage of the trials to assess the performance of players selected for Asian Games.
The Court has also ruled that perks of players participating in Asian Games shall be released subject to further orders of the Court.
InsideSports.co reached out the AKFI assistant secretary Devraj Chaturvedi for reaction. He declined to comment, saying he was occupied with the lawyers.
